250,000 Free Chess Sets

Fergus Christie, Sales Director of Holloid Plastics Ltd., has offered manufacturing some 250,000 chess sets completely free of charge which could be distributed to schools throughout England. For Peter J B Wilson, ECF Director of Marketing, this "is the most exciting chess project I have ever had the pleasure of being connected with and potentially could change the face of English chess for ever".

The 10^th European Team Chess Championship starts in Dresden (Germany) on Monday, 2008-02-11, with the opening ceremony and round 1. 68 teams are registrated from AUT, CZE, DEN, ENG, ESP, FIN, GER, ISR, ITA, LUX, NED, NOR, POL, RUS, SCO, SUI, SWE and TUR.

Robert James ("Bobby") Fischer (March 9, 1943 - January 17, 2008), the 11^th World Chess Champion (1972-1975) has passed away in Iceland. He was buried on January 21 at a churchyard near Selfoss (southern Iceland).
