During his second visit to Cuba in April 2008, the 12
th World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov (Russia) was honoured as "Man of the Future" by Havana's Computer Science University.

On April 23, 2008 Novotel Plovdiv (Bulgaria) hosted a meeting of the
Balkan Chess Federation (BALC). BALC was established on August 20, 2006 in Athens, by the chess federations of Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and Turkey as founding members. ECU President Boris Kutin and ECU Board Member Vladimir Sakotic attended the BALC meeting.

The 9th
European Individual Chess Championship and the 9th
European Individual Women´s Chess Championship will start on Sunday (April 20) with the opening ceremony. The championships will be held in the Novotel Plovdiv (Bulgaria). The first round begins on Monday (April 21) at 14.30.
