To all

European Federations

Berlin, March 3, 2000

Dear friends,

It is a pleasure for me to inform you that the ECU office has just moved in close vicinity to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Therefore, we have a new telephone and fax number (see above).

The deadline for the European Individual Women's Championship, European Club Cup for Women and European Senior Championship has been the end of February. We have received the following bids:

European Individual Women's Championship: Patras (Greece), Batumi (Georgia)

European Club Cup: Krynica (Poland), Sopron (Hungary), Sarajevo (BIH), St. Petersburg (Russia), Croatia, Kranjska gora (Slovenia)

European Club Cup for Women: Croatia, Halle/S. (Germany)

European Senior Championship: Slovenia

The Board will discuss the bids and decide upon the venues at the next meeting in Budva (Montenegro) from March 24 until 26, 2000.

As you already know, the first European Individual Championship will be held in

St.-Vincent/Italy. Enclosed you will find a letter of Mr Alvise Zichichi, President of the Italian Chess Federation, asking for your cooperation for this important ECU Championship. Each federation is entitled to send one nominated player, for whom a lower entry fee and lower rates for accommodation have to be paid. The total prizefund has been increased to

60.000 Euro. You can find all information on the webside of the organizer: www.netvallee.it/scacchi. The list of extra nominated players according to the regulations and some details are enclosed. The deadline for the registration will be June 4, 2000. In order to guarantee the issue of visa, players, who need a visa for Italy, have to inform the Organizing Committee by May 20, 2000. We really hope that all federations will contribute to make this championship (open for all up to 600 players) a big success.

Unfortunately, the FIDE Presidential Board, rejected our proposal to grant the right to the first three players of this championship to participate in the Individual World Championship. Therefore – as already stated in Batumi – only the European Champion will qualify for the WCC.

Concerning the participation of foreigners in the European Club Cup, we have received some complaints about the decision of the GA in Batumi. The reason is that some federations had already finished their championships before this decision was made. Therefore they could not consider the new regulations. The ECU Board will discuss this issue at the next meeting in Budva.

The this years Mitropa-Cup will be held with the support of the "Ardennes" county Charleville-Mézières (200 km north east from Paris) from November 25 to December 2, 2000. According to the decision of the FIDE Executive Board in Doha, title norms can be achieved based on 8 games. A 9 round International Open will be organized parallel to the Mitropacup.

We would like to use the ECU circular letters to exchange information between the European federations. Do not hesitate to post your reports or news to the ECU in order to distribute them among our member federations:
