Circular Letter no. 8 / 2000

Dear friends,

Enclosed you will find the Minutes of the General Assembly in Istanbul on 9 November 2000.

On 12 November 2000 another Board meeting took place. The Board agreed to ask David Anderton to check the contract between ECU and KasparovChessOnline in order to cancel the cooperation. We are prepared to sign a contract with Games Parlor and EDAMI concerning an official ECU game-site and our website.

It had been agreed between FIDE and ECU that the Greek Chess Federation should organize European events in 2001 and 2002 and FIDE events in 2003 and 2004. This decision should strenghten the Greek position regarding the incooporation of Chess in the Olympic Games 2004.

The Board decided to hold the European Junior Championship 2001 in Patras /Greece. The proposed period is between 15 and 30 July 2001. This period will be shortened by two days, either the tournament will start later or will finish earlier.

After having discussed the three bids from Kallithea /Greece, Pardubice /Czech Republic and

Hungary, the Board decided to hold the European Youth Championship 2001 once more in Kallithea. It was pointed out that the total financial contribution for the invited players should not exeed 150 US$. This championship should take place until midst of September 2001.

On proposal of Werner Stubenvoll, the Board fixed some more details of the European Grand Prix scheduled for 2001. The payment of the participating tournament organizers is requested within one week after the signature of the contract or two months prior to the tournament. Morton Sand is preparing the draft of the contract. If a player participates in more than five tournaments, the average of his best five rating performances is calculated. All information about the European Grand Prix should be published on the website of the Slovenian Chess Federation until the ECU website will be available.

The Board would like to point out that the deadline of bids for the next European Club Cup is

31 January 2000. Bids should be sent to our Secretariat in Berlin. The amended rules for

the European Club Cup and the European Club Cup for Women will be distributed to all federations with the next circular letter at the beginning of 2001.

Moreover, the Board would like to ask you to inform your chess magazines and your members about the European Senior Team Championship being held in Dresden/Germany from 26 February until 3 March 2001.

The International School Chess Union had been accepted as associated member by the decision of the Board in Istanbul. ISCU will organize the two important school events:
