Circular Letter No. 4/2001 May 16th 2001

Dear Friends

The 2nd European Women's Championship held in the Marriott-Hotel (Warsaw/ Poland) with its luxurious facilities has been successful. 157 players (including 64 Grandmasters and approx. 40 International Masters) participated in this open championship. It was a particularly impressive women's tournament. We would like to congratulate the Polish Chess Federation and the new European Champion Almira Skripchenko-Lautier! Enclosed you will find the final results. According to the FIDE regulations the first 31 players qualified for the World Championship at the end of this year.

The next important European event will be the 2nd European Individual Championship in Ohrid/ Macedonia from 1st-15th of June 2001. The official invitations have been sent to all national federations. Although the political situation in Macedonia seems to be a little bit uncertain, there should not be any risk for the players. Had the Macedonian government declared the situation to be war, this championship would have been cancelled. As you can see from the attached statements from several embassies there appear to be no warnings regarding travel to Skopia and between Skopia and Ohrid. Furthermore the Slovenian ambassador has also clearly stated that he doesn't see any problems with regard to the event. We are looking forward to a great event in Ohrid.

The preparations for the European Individual Championship 2002 in Groningen/ Netherlands have been started. Perhaps, due to the tie-breaks, this championship will last until January 5th 2002. The invitation with all details will be distributed in time. The conditions of participation will be the same as this year in Ohrid.

We would like to emphasize that bids for the following European Championship have to reach our secretariat by August 1st 2001:

- European Individual Women's Championship 2002.
- European Junior Championship 2002.
- European Youth Championships 2002.

Meanwhile, the new date for this year's European Rapid and Blitz Championships has been fixed. Both events are to be held in Sopot/ Poland. The Rapid Championship will take place on 29th and 30th of August, the Blitz Championship directly thereafter on 31stof August and September 1st 2001. The Polish Chess Federation will send out the invitations within the next few days.

Up to now, we could not finalize the venue and the date for the European Women's and Rapid Championship. Negotiations are ongoing.

As already announced, the European Individual Senior Championship will be held in St. Vincent/ Italy. Last year this championship had to be cancelled. This year it will be a great success as the organizer offers free accomodation to one player per federation. As this tournament will be rated as National Italian Championship, too, the participation of many players is guaranteed. You will receive the invitations within the next days.

Agreed with the ECU, a new European Championship has been created by the Yugoslavian Chess Federation: European Individual and Team Chess Championships for Cadets and Juniors (Rapid and Blitz). These tournaments will be held in Novi Sad from 20th-25th of November 2001. The Yugoslavian Chess Federation has been granted the right to organize tournaments at the same location also in 2002 and 2003. We hope these championships will develop as successfully as Euro-Disney did in Paris in former times.

Enclosed you will find some information about the European festival "Chess in School" which will be held under the auspices of the ECU in Sudak/ Ukraine from 16th-22nd of September 2001.

As you probably know, the ECU has entered into a cooperation with the Games Parlor - an internet service specialized in matters to do with games. Now we are looking for an officer who is interested in such an internet activity and who will coordinate the European interests. Combined with this cooperation will be the organisation of European Internet Championships. If any member of your federation is interested please contact our secretariat.

Kind regards,

Horst Metzing
Secretary General
