Circular Letter No. 06/2002

Dear Friends,

During the last two months, some of the European championships took place. The results are published on our website. We would like to thank all organisers for their efforts and congratulate the winners.

Despite the fact that the 3rd European Individual Championship had to be prepared at short notice, the Georgian Chess Federation managed to hold a strong tournament with 101 participants in Batumi. The first 5 players have qualified for the forthcoming World Championship. The European champion became Bartlomiej Macieja from Poland.

114 players participated in the 3rd European Individual Women’s Championship in Varna/Bulgaria. Antoaneta Stefanova from the organizing federation is the new European champion. The first 12 players are qualified for the next Women’s World Championship.

The European Junior Championship in Baku was supposed to suffer from the fact that the majority of the European federations seems to be in favour of cancelling the championship U20. A respective motion will be proposed by the ECU Board for the Bled General Assembly. European Junior Champion became Zviad Izoria/Georgia (boys group) and Zeinab Mamedyarova/Azerbaijan (girls group). Only 15 federations sent their representatives to Azerbaijan.

The 3rd Boy’s and Girl’s U18 Team Championships were held in Balatonlelle/Hungary once more. 13 boys team and 11 girls team enjoyed the sunny and warm weather at the Balaton. Unfortunately, most of the West European federations did not send their youth teams to this championship because of having participated in the Glorney and Faber Cup. Our objective is to combine both events in order to have one strong European Youth Team Championship. The winners were Rumania (boys group) and Ukraine (girls group).

Bids for the European Youth Team Championship 2003 are to reach our Secretariat by 1 September 2002.

The European Grand Prix is going to be animated. Our Tournament Director Agostino Scalfi has invited all representatives of the Grand Prix tournaments to a meeting in St.-Vincent/Italy from 3 to 6 October 2002.

ECU and the company Euro Schach Dresden have agreed to cooperate with regard to the promotion and marketing of the electronic clock “Schach Timer – Silver”. This clock is recommended by ECU to be used in all European championships and all official ECU events. As a special offer, all European federations can buy these clocks with a reduction of approx. 40 percent for the price of €25 (minimum quantity of 50 pieces). This clock will be demonstrated during our Extraordinary General Assembly.

The next ECU Board Meeting will be held in Budapest/Hungary on 23 August 2002.

We would like to remind you that the Extraordinary General Assembly will be organised in Budapest on 24 and 25 August 2002. Unfortunately, only approx. 20 federations have confirmed to attend it up to now. We kindly ask all other federations to reconsider their coming to Budapest. Materials will be distributed via e-mail in time.

Our annual General Assembly in connection with the FIDE Congress is scheduled in Bled/Slovenia on 7 November 2002. In accordance with 4.17 of the ECU Statutes, the official invitations will be distributed not later than two weeks after the invitations to the FIDE Congress. Proposals from member federations to be included in the agenda should reach our Secretariat as soon as possible (the exact deadline will be announced in the invitation later).

By the deadline of 7 August 2002 midnight, FIDE received the following nominations for the office of European Continental President (ECU President): Boris Kutin, Javier Ochoa De Echaguen Estibaiez and Jan Ehlvest.

Enclosed you will find the updated ECU Tournament Calendar.

Looking forward to meeting you in Budapest.

Best regards,

Horst Metzing

Secretary General
