Dear Friends,

Circular Letter No. 7/2002

The extraordinary ECU General Assembly took place in Budapest last weekend. You have received the minutes and are informed about the main discussions and decisions. I would like to thank once more the Hungarian Chess Federation for having organized a smooth General Assembly and a nice evening reception at the bank of the river Danube.

Attached you will find the preliminary version of the Ad-hoc Committee Report which was thoroughly discussed in the Budapest meeting. Federations are requested to send any comments to Peter Rajcsanyi, Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, e-mail: ug1151@matavnet.hu, in order to prepare the final report for approval of the General Assembly in Bled.

The Board met already on 23 August and dealt with some important issues.

It was noticed that Edami and ChessBase are interested in organizing the first European Internet Championship. A final decision will be taken in Bled in November. Thereafter the first championship can be held at the beginning of the year 2003.

The European Youth Championship 2003 has been granted to Budva/Montenegro (Yugoslavia). The final dates will be fixed later on (proposed dates in August/September).

ECU has applied for membership in the European Masters Association (EMA). This organisation of senior sports was founded in Potsdam/Germany on 18 August 2002. The Board has nominated Prof. Per Ofstad from Norway as official delegate to EMA.

More than 40 teams have registered to the European Club Cup being held in Kallithea/Greece from 22 to 29 September 2002. The Women´s European Club Cup does not meet with the same interest, but more than 15 teams will participate in Antalya/Turkey from 28 September to 7 October 2002.

On request of the Hungarian Chess Federation a European Festival for U8 is to be held in Budapest from 15 to 17 March 2003. One boy, one girl and an accompanying person from each European federation will be invited to this rapid chess tournament.

We once more would like to point out that all federations should send their players to the 2. European Senior Championship in St.-Vincent/Italy from 28 September to 6 October 2002. One player per federation is invited with full board and accommodation. Please, contact Mr. Agostino Scalfi for further details. More than 80 players have already registered.

The invitation to our annual General Assembly in Bled/Slovenia on 7 November 2002 was distributed yesterday by e-mail and posted to all European Federations.

For clarification we wish to draw your attention to the fact that according to the ECU Statutes there is no deadline for forwarding any application for Board members. Candidates are allowed to announce their willingness to run until the beginning of the elections. Up to now we have received the applications of Gerry Walsh (England) and Peter Rajcsanyi (Hungary).

Looking forward to meeting you in Bled.

Best regards,

Horst Metzing

Secretary General
