Dear Friends,
Circular Letter No. 8/2002
Following the discussions on the Ad-hoc Committee Report and according to the decisions of our Extraordinary General Assembly in Budapest, we had a consultation with FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos and Treasurer David Jarrett. This meeting took place at the beginning of the European Club Cup in Kalithea/Greece on 21 and 22 September 2002. It was held in an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual understanding. ECU was represented by President Boris Kutin, Treasurer Egon Ditt, Secretary General Horst Metzing, Tournament Director Dirk De Ridder and Ad-hoc Committee Member Peter Rajcsanyi.
As a result, we can state that FIDE is prepared to give financial autonomy to the Continents. The principals for such a strategy are already published as annex of the Agenda of the FIDE Congress in Bled (attached).
Concerning the Calendar Structure, we have found a solution that guarantees a clear system of fixing dates for the World Championships and respecting the interests of the Continents (attached). These proposals have to be discussed and accepted by the FIDE General Assembly.
Bosnia Sarajevo (Bosnia & Herzegovina) could win for the fourth time the European Club Cup held in Kalithea/Greece. Second was the team of Norilsky Nikel (Russia) ahead of Polonia Plus GSM Warsaw (Poland). Altogether 43 teams participated in this event.
For the European Youth Team Championship 2003, we have received bids from the Hungarian and from the Turkish Chess Federation. The Board will decide upon the venue at the next meeting in Bled on 5 and 6 November 2002.
Once more, we would like to ask you to answer our questionnaire about the member of your registered players. Since we do not know how many chess players are represented by ECU, we are not in a strong position to negotiate with sponsors.
Looking forward to meeting you in Bled.
Best regards,
Horst Metzing
Secretary General
