Dear Friends,
Circular Letter No. 07/2003
The ECU Board had a meeting in Gothenburg/Sweden on 25 and 26 April 2003. We would like to thank the Swedish Chess Federation and the Gothenburg Convention and Tourism Company for hosting this regular meeting. Hence the Board members were able to meet the Board of the Swedish Chess Federation.
Concerning the European Team Championship 2005 it has been agreed that all federations will receive copies of the three bids from Gothenburg, Istanbul and Heraklion by post within the next month. This is the basis for the final decision of the ECU General Assembly 2003 in Plovdiv/Bulgaria. The bidders are allowed to address the federation for further information but the bids cannot be changed or increased anymore.
The European Individual Championship 2004 has been awarded to the Turkish Chess Federation that has offered a prize fund of 55.000,-- €. The proposed time period is May/June.
Dresden/Germany will be the venue of the European Individual Women’s Championship 2004. The dates are 20 March to 3 April, the prize fund amounts at least to 28.000,-- €.
For the European Youth Championship 2004 very good bids from the Turkish Chess Federation and from Pardubice/Czech Republic had been received. Finally the Board has decided to grant this event to Capodoccia-Nevsehir. The dates have already been fixed:
28 July (arrival) until 7 August 2004 (departure).
As the European Youth Team Championship 2004 will be hosted by the Turkish Chess Federation as well it has been agreed to combine it with the Individual Youth Championship in order to allow the participation of a lot of national youth teams. This team event will therefore be organized in Capodoccia-Nevsehir, too (7 – 15 August).
Excellent bids had been received for the European Club Cup and for the European Club Cup for Women 2004. Budapest, St.-Vincent (Italy) and Istanbul were prepared to host these prestigious gatherings of the best European clubs. It was a very difficult decision for the Board, but finally it has been decided to award these European Club Cups to Istanbul from 2 to 10 October 2004 (most probably Marine Princess Hotel).
The senior chess tradition will be continued in the beautiful surroundings of the Aosta Valley in Italy. St.-Vincent will host the 4. European Senior Championship in September 2004.
The 6. Senior Team Championship 2004 has been given to Dresden where the first five events were already organized. The dates and the exact venues are already announced:
Ramada Treff Hotel Dresden, 22 to 29 February 2004.
The following open tournaments have been included in the ECU Grand Prix 2003:
Open Lido Degliestensi (Italy) 9 – 16 June 2003
ZMD Open Dresden (Germany) 17 – 25 July 2003
Saraybahce Open in Kocaeli/Izmit (Turkey) 17 – 24 August 2003
Open Porto San Giorgio (Italy) 20 – 29 August 2003
Open Izmir (Turkey) 25 August – 1 September 2003
Atatürk Open Istanbul/Turkey 22 – 30 November 2003
Open St.-Vincent/Italy 7 – 15 February 2003
Furthermore, the results of the European Individual Championships (Men and Women) are counted for the Grand Prix as well.
The Board has resolved to co-operate with the German company ChessBase for internet chess purposes. A first official European Internet Championship is going to be held this year. Technical details will be announced later on.
Concerning the debts of some ECU member federations, the Board referred to the respective stipulations of the Statutes. The Treasurer will address these federations and ask for payment by the next Board meeting. According to Art. 8.9 of the statutes, member federations who have not paid their current fees, lose their vote at the General Assembly. The Board can exclude them from ECU events.
Best regards,
Horst Metzing
Secretary General
