Dear Friends,

Circular Letter No. 04/2004

As already announced in our previous Circular Letter this year’s European Individual Championship will be held in Antalya/Turkey from 14 to 31 May. Attached you will find the official invitation with all details. Due to internal reasons the name of the hotel will be published later.

The Dutch Chess Federation has protested against these dates because there will be a clash with the play-offs of the National Team Championship. In order to avoid similar cases in the future they propose as follows: The dates for international championships will be fixed dates. First FIDE will set the dates for the World Championship and Olympiad. Then the dates of the Continental Championships will be set. After that it is possible to organize tournaments without the threat of colliding with the international championships.

The Chess Federation of Serbia and Montenegro has fixed the dates of the European youth events which will be organized in Belgrade.

European Youth Team Championship 9 to 17 July 2004

European Rapid and Blitz Championship 18 to 21 July 2004

On 29 March 2004 in Dresden ECU President Boris Kutin together with Zurab Azmaiparashvili and Horst Metzing met Joel Lautier, President of the Association of Chess Professionals. It was a fruitful meeting. All controversial problems were discussed. The issue of the official hotels was mentioned. Boris Kutin will take up this topic in the next Board meeting and will recommend that the ECU General Assembly should change the respective tournament regulations. In general, it has been agreed to co-operate as far as the interests of the professional players are involved.
