Dear Friends,

Circular Letter No. 8/2004

Upon invitation of the Chess Federation of Moldova a Board Meeting took place in Chisinau on 13 and 14 August 2004. Many thanks to the federation’s President and Mayor of Chisinau, Mr Serafim Urecheanu and Mr Feodor Skripchenko for an excellent organization. On this occasion the Board was informed about the preparations for next year’s European Individual Women’s Championship which will be held in this country.

There have been a lot of complaints about the hotel of the Individual Championship 2004 in Turkey. The President of the Turkish Chess Federation and ECU Board Member Mr Ali Nihat Yazici explained the reasons for the necessary change of the hotel. Due to the dates of the World Championship in Libya the Turkish Chess Federation was forced to cancel all preparations for the European Championship scheduled from 14 to 31 May 2004. Later on, when the dates for the World Championship were finally fixed ECU once more asked the Turkish Chess Federation to keep the dates and to host the European Championship. As to the short time for preparation the signed contract with the Nautilus Hotel did not include all precautions. Then, on 11 May, there happened a force major situation in the hotel. It was basically a flood problem. Luckily another hotel in Belek could be found and all promises given in the bid could be fulfilled. As a kind of compensation all players have been offered to be invited to an open tournament in Turkey later on.

Until now there is no concrete offer for the European Individual Championship 2005. Negotiations are still in progress. The Board has granted the 2006 Championship to Aydin – Kusadasi/Turkey. It will be held together with the European Individual Women’s Championship 2006.

There was only one bid for the European Youth Championship 2006. It has been accepted by the Board. This championship is scheduled in Budva/Serbia & Montenegro from 18 to 30 September. But the dates may be moved for some days.

Tampere/Finland, Fuegen/Austria and San Xenxo/Spain were the bidders for the European Club Cup 2006. Budva/Serbia & Montenegro withdrew the offer, another bid from Sotchi/Russia was too late. It was very difficult for the Board members in finding the venue because all bids had been excellent. Finally it has been decided to grant this event to Fuegen.

In order to give the organizer of the European Club Cup 2007 more time of preparation and to include all kind of technical improvement the Board decided that all bids have to be presented by 31 December 2004. For all other European Championship the deadline for bids is 1 July 2005 (excluding the European Team Championship).

The European Youth Team Championship 2006 will be held in Balatonlelle/Hungary from 19 to 28 June. The Board expressed the hope that much more teams than this year in Belgrade will participate in the future events. The ECU Youth Co-ordinator Goran Antunac has been asked for his opinion about the most convenient dates for all European youth championships.

Once more, the European Individual and Team Championship for Cadets and Juniors has been granted to the Chess Federation of Serbia & Montenegro. This attractive youth event will be held in Budva from 1 to 5 October 2006.

The European Individual Senior Championship 2005 will be organized in Bad Homburg/Germany from 24 June to 4 July. Davos/Switzerland has offered to be the host for the 2006 championship.

Dresden will hold the European Senior Team Championship 2006 from 18 to 25 February.

The 1. European Amateur Championship in Pardubice/Czech Rebublic was a successful event. Next year’s championship has been granted to the Chess Federation of Serbia & Montenegro. It will be held in Petrovac no moru from 26 May to 4 June 2005.

In co-operation with ChessBase the 2nd European Internet Championship will take place on 6 and 7 November 2004. In principle, the tournament regulations will be the same as last year. Details will be published later on.

The European Rapid Championship 2005 is scheduled in Basel/Switzerland for 1 and 2 January. Further information can be found under www.beochess.ch/hilton.htm

Attached you will find the updated tournament calendar and the agenda of the ECU General Assembly being held in Calvìa/Spain on 27 October 2004. The attachment includes proposals for changes of the Tournament Regulations as well.

Two years ago ECU and the company EURO SCHACH Dresden have agreed to co-operate with regard to the promotion and marketing of the electronic clock “SchachTimer Silver”. This clock is recommended by ECU to be used in all European Championships and all official ECU events. A special offer is still available for European federations to buy these clocks with an extreme reduction price of 25,-- € without cost of transportation and taxes.
