Circular Letter No. 1/2007

Dear Friends,

From 11 to 15 January 2007, the ECU Board was invited to this year’s first meeting to Baku. We thank the Chess Federation of Azerbaijan and the ECU Treasurer Mahir Mammedov for the hospitality.

The Board expressed its deepest sympathy on the passing of the former Board member Marton Krajcsovits to his family and the Hungarian Chess Federation. Martion Krajcsovits has served as a Board member from 1998 to 2000.

For the time being the update of the ECU Manual is prepared in order to publish the 2007 Manual within the next months. All federations are once more asked to inform us by 15 February 2007 about all changes of their data as well as of all additional information which should be included into the Manual.

Bids for the European Individual Championships 2008 (Men and Women) had been received from Antalya/Turkey and from Plovdiv/Bulgaria. Both bids were of a high level, therefore it was difficult for the Board to determine the venue. Finally it has been decided to hold these championships in the Novotel in Plovdiv.

Leptokaria and Kalithea/both Greece as well as Plovdiv/Bulgaria had sent their bids for the European Club Cup 2008. After a thoroughly comparison of these offers it was decided to grant this event to Kalithea.

As already announced earlier, the 1st European Youth Championships Under 8 will be organized by the Georgian Chess Federation and the Chess Club Kasus in Batumi. The first three championships will be held on a trial basis in order to gain experience with a championship for this young children.

The European Individual Senior Championship 2008 was given once more to Davos/Switzerland. The proposed period is 9 to 17 August.

The European Youth Team Championship 2008 was granted to the Hungarian Chess Federation. This championship is scheduled in the Novotel Szeged from 19 to 28 June.

The Warsaw Chess Foundation will be entitled to organize the European Rapid Championship 2007 (at the end of this year). For 2008 we still wait for bids.

On 25 and 26 October 2007 Ajaccio/Corsica (France) will hold the European Individual Blitz Championship.

The European Individual and Team Championship for Cadets and Juniors (Rapid and Blitz) are moved to Sobotica/Serbia from 15 to 18 July 2007. The 2008 championships will be held in Herceg Novi/Montenegro.

Attached you will find the official announcement about the European Union Championship 2007 which will be held in Arvier/Italy from 15 to 24 June. The EU Youth Championship 2007 will be held in Mureck/Austria.

The Board fixed 1st July 2007 as deadline for all bids for European Championships 2009. As an exception, the deadline for the European Team Championship 2011 is 1st January 2008.

On the occasion of the European Individual Championships the next ECU Board Meeting is scheduled in Dresden on 13 and 14 April 2007.

ECU Press Officer Gerald Schendel has set up a regular newsletter. Those federations being interested in it should contact him directly ( pressofficer@eurochess.org).
