Circular Letter No. 01/2008
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year! Much success to all European federations!
As you have been informed by FIDE the 1st World Mind Games will be held in Beijing/China from 3 to 18 October 2008. Unfortunately these dates will clash with the European Club Cup in Kalithea from 12 to 18 October. We understand that such a coincidence could not be avoided. We do not know which European federations will be represented in Beijing and whether the clubs which will qualify for the European Club Cup will be affected by the 1st World Mind Games. But we will give you a chance to react because of this situation.
The organiser in Kalithea is prepared to try to move the European Club Cup by 10 days. This would mean that this event could be scheduled for the period from 21 to 27 October. We know that each change of dates might affect other tournaments or organisers. Nevertheless we would like to get your opinion on this subject. We therefore ask all European federations to let us know by 18 January 2008 whether you
- would prefer keeping the current dates of the European Club Cup
- moving the European Club Cup in order to avoid a clash with the 1st World Mind Games
Meanwhile the official website of the European Individual Championships (Men and Women) taking place in Plovdiv/Bulgaria from 20 April to 4 May 2008 is available: www.eicc2008.com. Please note the attached current version including registration form.
Attached you will find the invitation to the 3rd European School Team Championship in Varna from 20 to 28 June 2008. Immediately thereafter the 5th Open European Festival of School Champions (The Hopes of the World) will be held. As these events were run successfully in the past we recommend all federations to send a delegation to this Black Sea area.
The Georgian Chess Federation and the Chess Club "Kazus" (Batumi) have fixed the exact dates for the European Youth Championship Under 8. The second edition of this championship will take place from 4 to 15 June 2008.
Much to our regret we must inform you that Philip Hogarty, the Chairman of the Irish Chess Union, was killed in an accident a couple of days ago.
