175 years ago, in the summer of 1831, William Lewis, teacher of chess in London, made an excursion into Germany, visited there a small village called Stroebeck and published "Some account of the village of Stroebeck with three games, played according to the method practised there", in: "FIFTY GAMES AT CHESS, which have actually been played, most of which occured between the author and some of the best players in England, France and Germany" (pp. 93-108; London 1832). In 2006, Stroebeck, still existing and nowadays officially called "Schachdorf Stroebeck" (chess village Stroebeck), is the "Cultural Village of Europe 2006". The inhabitants are still proud of their chess tradition.
